How does Instagram comment-to-DM work?

What is comment-to-DM on Instagram?
Comment-to-DM is an automation that sends a private Instagram message to anyone who comments a chosen keyword on your post or reel. Creators use it to deliver links, prices and freebies without typing a single reply, and it keeps the conversation in DMs where people actually buy.
Is auto-DM allowed by Instagram? Can I get banned?
